UGR - Glare Rating

UGR - Glare Rating

Lighting design with uncomfortable glare can lead to eye strain, inability to concentrate and headaches contributing to reduced workforce productivity. Glare is a visual comfort factor of human-centric design. Managing glare properly can contribute to people feeling better in a space, lowering stress while increasing an occupant’s general well-being.
UGR, short for Unified Glare Rating, is a measure of how much glare a luminaire impacts a particular location in a visual environment. The values generally range from 10 to 30 where the higher value, the more significant the human eye discomfort.

UGR used with WELL Building Standard V2 Pilot

The WELL feature L04 Glare Control requires projects to manage glare using a combination of strategies. The UGR values are met per the below conditions:
1. Luminaires installed at height of 5m [16 ft] or lower meet UGR of 19 or lower. 2. Luminaires installed at height greater than 5m [16 ft] or lower meet UGR of 22 or lower

Zaniboni Lighting offers many products which meet the UGR requirement for WELL Building Standards. The engineering process pays close attention to designing products with regressed LED sources to achieve low glare.

The new Riga MT UGR Product is a great example, providing a lighting solution to achieve visually quiet ceiling while not compromising performance:
